Sea Salt Scrub-so quick to make, inexpensive, luxurious and (drumroll please) NO SOY and NO COCONUT OIL!
This diy Sea Salt Scrub is made with simple, natural, easy to find ingredients, its super easy, economical (read cheap 🙂 ) and super quick to make (like-just a few minutes guys!).
This sea salt scrub would make a fabulous gift for a loved one or for yourself!
A while back, I wrote about my adventures experimenting with making Homemade Sugar and Salt Scrub without Coconut Oil.  Now, don’t get me wrong, that scrub is totally great, BUT… I like this sea salt scrub even better!!!
Why sea salt?
The texture of this Sea Salt Scrub is a bit finer than with the one with epsom salt and sugar. Also, the oils seem distribute more evenly (and stay well mixed) in this Sea Salt Scrub. Yay!
I was able to find sea salt at my local Natural Grocers for a few dollars a bag. Each bag is able to make two batches of scrub. (Frugal win!)
No coconut oil???
I talked about this before in the original post but some folks (like me) don’t tolerate coconut oil well. You know how people say they love coconut oil and use it for this and that and the other thing. Best thing ever since sliced bread, right?!?
Yeah, NOPE! For me, its like you just dropped me in a vat of desiccant. My skin totally dries out and starts cracking, my allergic reactions are triggered, I get itchy. Yeah, its not pretty! Turns out, lots of people have this issue. As far as skin care products though, its usually pretty easy to come up with alternatives.
Ingredient Options
These types of recipes are just begging to be personalized.
Truly, you can use whatever oils you have on hand. Don’t like grapeseed oil? Well, you can use sweet almond oil, avocado oil, apricot kernel oil, more jojoba oil or sunflower seed oil, even good old olive oil from your kitchen. It really just depends on what you like, can afford, or have on hand. If you tolerate coconut oil well, then use coconut oil. I would if I could, but coconut oil just is not for me.
If you would like more information on the individual carrier oils, I went in depth on each in this post.
Essential oils (EO’s) can be used for their intrinsic properties, for scent, or left out altogether. Again, its all up to you! Some really great options are lavender, any citrus oils (orange, lemon, grapefruit, lime), or mints (peppermint, spearmint, or wintergreen). Cinnamon and Orange make a great combo that’s reminiscent of fall.
If you already have epsom salt and sugar in the house, then go ahead and use them with this recipe. Whichever version you choose, your homemade creation will be awesome!
Personalize your Sea Salt Scrub
Have fun and experiment a little! 😉
Personally, I think experimenting with scrubs is great because the batch is a reasonable size so you can use it up pretty quickly. This scrub blend really lets you try out your creative side and see what you like scent wise. Even if you don’t care for your original concoction you can always modify it. Not enough essential oil, add some more. Use too much essential oil, you can always add more carrier oil and sea salt to dilute. Worst case scenario and you completely bomb your batch, then toss it and start over. Your only out a few bucks. 😉
Sea Salt Scrub Use
Just a few notes for use:
- Slippery: Even though this recipe is MUCH less greasy than other scrubs, it can still be slippery. Be careful if using in the shower. No slips, trips or falls.  😉
- Storage: This scrubs has a pretty good shelf life. As long as you start with clean tools, utensils, containers and keep out moisture, the scrub will last as long as your carrier oil. Typically, if a scrub goes bad it is because of contamination from moisture. I like to put a smaller jar in my shower with a disposable plastic spoon. Water can contaminate your mixture so its important to make sure you keep the lid on it when not in use and keep it out of direct water.
- This scrub is really great for feet, elbows, rough skin and callous. Due to its abrasiveness, it WOULD NOT be good for your face or sensitive area’s.
- Scents: I really like to play with different scents so I will split the batch into smaller portions and add the essential oils. This way, I get multiple versions out of one batch. Be a bit sparing with the EO’s as the scent seems to get a little more potent as this recipe sits. Wintergreen is a strong essential oil. If you choose to use it, do so sparingly and keep away from children.
- You could certainly double or triple up this recipe if you are making big batches for gifts. I wouldn’t go over tripling the recipe just because it could be too messy and hard to mix up.
- Wax/Parchment paper: I like to put down wax paper on my counter/table when working on projects like these. It really helps to keep the surface mess down and make clean up a breeze.
